This short course introduces the topic of cybersecurity for schools from a whole-school leadership perspective. It outlines key cybersecurity concepts and highlights best practices for school leaders and digital learning teams in maintaining a safe and secure digital learning environment.
It is designed in collaboration with the Oide Technology in Education Digital Technology Infrastructure team.

The content of this course is the same as the Cybersecurity module from our summer online course Leading and Managing Digital Learning in your School (Primary).

This course contains the latest guidance in cybersecurity including expert videos and video animations explaining key concepts. You will learn the basics of cybersecurity, considerations from a whole-school perspective and steps you can take to make your school digital learning environment safer.
There are two lessons in the course:
Lesson 1 – What is cybersecurity
This lesson introduces key cybersecurity concepts, including types of cyber threats, basic security measures, and the importance of maintaining a secure digital environment.
Lesson 2 – A whole school approach to cybersecurity
This lesson explores the importance of a whole school approach to cybersecurity, providing guidance on implementing effective cybersecurity policies and procedures within your school.
Course Quiz – The course content section concludes with a course quiz to help you consolidate your learning.
Device: A laptop, desktop pc or tablet* with the latest version of Chrome, Firefox or Safari installed. A good broadband internet connection is essential.
*Most tablet devices work well with our course software, but some older devices may not be compatible. Please do not use a smartphone to complete the course.
Software/Apps: While this course is free, the content includes examples of many apps and software titles for the purposes of illustration, some of which involve a cost.
This course maps to the Leadership and Management dimension of the Digital Learning Framework, in particular Domain 2: Managing the Organisation.

A course certificate is provided upon successful completion of this course.
You may be able to consider this course for Croke Park hours, subject to school management approval, particularly in relation to up to ten ‘Croke Park’ hours that may be allowed for potential individual/small group use (Circular 0042/2016 Primary and Circular 045/2016 Post-primary).
