New Switched On Programme Empowers Primary Pupils to Become Safe, Smart and Responsible Digital Citizens

Online Safety Commissioner Niamh Hodnett will today officially launch Switched On, a new national digital citizenship programme for 5th and 6th class pupils
Developed by Webwise, in collaboration with and supported by Coimisiún na Meán, the Switched On Programme has been created to assist and support educators in teaching pupils how to be safe, responsible, and competent digital citizens, as they prepare to transition into post-primary education.
The launch takes place at St. Joseph’s NS in Bonnybrook, Dublin 17 where pupils will be the first in the country to use the new resource. Following today’s launch, Switched On will be available for free to all primary schools throughout Ireland.
Throughout the programme, pupils will explore the opportunities of digital technology while developing critical thinking skills, and practical strategies for staying safe online. It also will help them develop healthy digital habits and understand their rights and responsibilities in the digital environment. Pupils are encouraged to be active digital citizens in a variety of online activities such as creating or publishing content, socialising, learning, researching and playing games.
This new resource supports schools in equipping pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly and critically. Each module includes take-home resources to encourage meaningful conversations between children and parents/guardians about online life, helping to strengthen communication and shared understanding.
