AI-DL Project – Data Literacy in the Age of AI for Education

Empowering secondary schools to understand and critically engage with data in the age of generative AI.

What are the project aims?

This is an EU funded AI in education project which aims to

  • Enhance the data literacy of school communities (school leaders, teachers and students), enabling them to critically understand how data is created and used by GenAI and humans through the lens of democratic values.
  • Critically reflect on and evaluate data-driven outputs to utilise them creatively, effectively, and thoughtfully in educational activities
  • Support school communities in critically using Generative AI as a trigger for developing ethical, responsible, and democratic data practices
  • Develop Communities of Practice (CoPs) in each school to co-design, test, and reflect on classroom scenarios, that will shape training, resources, and policy recommendations, through feedback.

What activities are involved?

  • Diagnosis and preparation: conducting baseline studies to understand current practices and needs.
  • Content design: Developing practical training materials in collaboration with ministries.
  • Experimentation: Implementing training in schools to test its effectiveness.
  • Evaluation: Assessing the impact of training for continuous improvement.
  • Dissemination and upscaling: Sharing resources and recommendations to expand the project’s reach.

How will schools in Ireland benefit?

Schools in Ireland stand to gain in several tangible ways:

  1. Enhance student literacy: empower students to understand, question, and responsibly use data in an AI-driven world.
  1. Improved teacher capacity: participating teachers will be trained in AI data literacy and consider how Generative AI tools might be used in educational activities through real-world examples, ready-to-use classroom materials and a supportive network of fellow teachers across Europe.
  1. Real-world experimentation support: Irish schools will have direct support in piloting and refining AI data-based practices in their classrooms, through communities of practice.
  1. Networking, collaboration & recognition: Schools will become part of a European network of innovation, enabling cross-border exchanges, visibility, and collaboration.
  1. Policy influence & sustainability: Evidence from Ireland’s participation can inform national policy dialogue on embedding AI data literacy in curricula and teacher development programmes beyond the project period.

How to get involved

If your school is interested in engaging with the AI-DL project, possible routes include:

  • Pilot participation: express interest in being one of the trial schools in Ireland when pilot recruitment rounds open.
