Linking Digital Learning with the Primary Language Curriculum at Trinity Primary School Tuam
Video Overview
Staff at Trinity Primary School in Tuam discuss how they have integrated digital learning planning with the Primary Language Curriculum to promote problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.
Description
As part of their DEIS plan focusing on literacy—particularly oral language—the school launched a digital portfolio project with 6th class. After pre-testing pupils’ oral language skills, they implemented a ten-week station teaching intervention, followed by post-testing to measure progress.
Pupils used Chromebooks and tools like Book Creator, Canva, and Google Classroom to create and record oral recounts. They practiced self-assessment by reviewing their own recordings and rating themselves. Canva’s AI translation tool allowed pupils to convert their work into their home languages, making learning more inclusive and shareable with families.
The digital portfolios project boosted pupils’ digital literacy, confidence, creativity, and engagement. It was adaptable to different skill levels and teachers found the process rewarding and saw clear improvements in oral language skills. Their digital learning team provides regular workshops for staff on tools like Book Creator, AI, and Seesaw.
