Tablets in a Junior School

A school principal outlines how her school uses tablets for literacy and numeracy. She also explains the implementation of ICT in the school starting with teachers who are more comfortable using ICT. Teachers use a variety of apps, both content rich and content free e.g. Explain Everything.

Description

Pupils in a junior school have enhanced their literacy lessons through the use of ICT and the ‘Explain Everything’ app. Infant classes work in pairs, practising phonics through apps; as well as looking at reading comprehensions and sight words during literacy hour. First class children made a video file, recording a piece about themselves and audio recording the description of ‘Mé Féin’. The Group Model was used in this school, with tablets being used as a group activity through stations. Teacher collaboration was significant in this process, sharing best practices, ideas and new apps that were sourced. Older class also supported younger classes.
