Prompting with the RASE Framework

The quality of the output you receive from a Generative AI tool depends on the quality of the prompt you provide.
The Oide RASE Prompting Framework is a simple, practical guide that helps teachers and school leaders write clearer, more effective prompts when using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot or Gemini.
The RASE Framework encourages a structured approach to prompting. It helps you provide the AI with the information it needs to generate responses that are more relevant, accurate and useful for your teaching, planning or leadership tasks.
Four steps
The RASE four steps are:
- Role – Give the GenAI tool a role (e.g. primary or post-primary teacher, subject specialist, school leader).
- Ask – Clearly define the task you want the AI to perform.
- Specific – Include details such as the audience, reading level, format, tone, length or curriculum focus.
- Experiment – Refine your prompt, ask follow-up questions and explore different approaches to improve the response.

As with all AI-generated content, educators should always review responses for accuracy, bias and suitability before using them in a school context. AI should always support, rather than replace, professional judgement.
