This short, practical course introduces primary teachers to podcasting as a creative and engaging way for pupils to develop their language and communication skills.
Designed with key input from the Oide Primary Language Curriculum team, the course explores how podcasting can support the Primary Language Curriculum providing pupils with opportunities to plan, create and share their ideas for a real audience.
You don’t need previous podcasting experience or advanced digital skills. The course will take you through the process step by step, from exploring curricular uses to recording and creating a simple podcast.
You’ll also be introduced to podcast creation tools and will choose a suitable tool to create your own short sample podcast.
Learning Outcomes
Participants will be enabled to:
- Describe how podcasting and digital learning can support learning within the Primary Curriculum

Course content
There are three modules in this course.
1 . Introduction to Podcasting
This module introduces podcasting and explores some of the ways it can support learning within the Primary Curriculum. You’ll explore how engaging with podcasting can assist in developing key skills of the Primary Curriculum Framework (PCF), including Being a Digital Learner.
2. Podcasting and the Primary Language Curriculum
Through practical examples of podcast projects, you will explore how pupils can use podcasting to develop skills in areas such as oral language, listening, writing and comprehension. You will also link learning outcomes of the PCF with classroom practice.
3. Podcasting Tools and Resources
This module takes you through the podcasting process step by step – from planning and recording to basic editing and creating your finished podcast. You’ll explore the devices and tools you can use, follow simple tutorials and create a short sample podcast of your own.
Requirements
Technical Requirements: Participants will be required to download one (free) app. A good broadband internet connection and a laptop, desktop pc or tablet (with the latest version of Chrome, Firefox or Safari installed) are also required.
Participants need to access Padlet, a third party application, as part of the course. A Padlet account is not required. Please be aware of the Padlet privacy policy and terms of service.
Certificate/Badge
A course certificate, together with a digital badge, is provided upon completion of this course.
You may be able to consider this course for Croke Park hours, subject to school management approval, particularly in relation to up to ten ‘Croke Park’ hours that may be allowed for potential individual/small group use (Circular 0042/2016 Primary and Circular 045/2016 Post-primary).
