5 Considerations for Teacher Use of AI

AI should be used where it enhances teaching, learning and school leadership, but always under the professional judgement of teachers and school leaders, with safety, ethics, privacy and inclusion at the centre of decision-making.

Before using any AI tool in your teaching, take a moment to consider these five key questions:
1. Policies and Guidelines
Check that the AI tool aligns with your school’s policies, acceptable use policy (AUP), and any relevant Department of Education & Youth guidance.
2. Ethical Data Use
Never enter personal, confidential or student data into AI systems unless explicitly approved. Check that any use of AI is GDPR compliant.
3. Evidence of Impact
Ask whether the tool genuinely improves teaching, learning or assessment. Look for evidence, examples or case studies that demonstrate its educational value.
4. Bias Awareness
AI systems can reflect bias in their training data. Be aware of potential bias in AI-generated content and review outputs critically before using them.
5. Accuracy of Output
AI can make mistakes. Always verify AI-generated content against reliable sources before sharing it with students or using it in your teaching.
In summary, AI should support, not replace, your professional judgement. By considering these five areas before using any AI tool, you can make informed, safe and effective decisions that put teaching and learning first.
